Rob Watt
I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2001 with a First Class Honours Degree in Dramaturgy. When I realised that no one knew what a dramaturg was I called myself a Director!
My credits include: ‘Beyond’ by Shane Hough, 'Lone Star' by James McLure, ‘Beat Them/Join Them?’ by Jamie Beddard, Safe Emergency by Hannah Rodger, ‘Tom and Jerry’ by Nick Myles and ‘Hoax’ by Louise Warren ‘. I have directed work in variety of settings including the Soho Theatre, Stratford Circus, the Royal Court, a ship in Canary Wharf, a community centre in the middle of Hackney, a garden in Wimbledon and in a tunnel in Clapham.
I am an engaging and passionate creative professional with extensive experience of directing theatre in a variety of site specific and community settings with people from a diverse range of backgrounds (inc. professional actors, young offenders, people with disabilities). I have a breadth of experience of working through a devising process as well as working with writers and designers to create inspiring, significant and provocative theatre.
I have been successfully designing, delivering and leading cultural programmes for the past 10 years and have experienced firsthand the powerful impact culture has on people; from delivering a youth theatre in Hemel Hempstead at the beginning of my career to embedding an integrated arts programme for ‘at risk’ young people in East London.
After graduating I went on to work for Dacorum Borough Council as an Arts Education Officer. I then became the Projects Manager at the Hackney based Immediate Theatre in 2003 after which I managed the BAFTA awarded ‘L8R’ project in 2007. Since returning as the Associate Director at Immediate Theatre in 2008 I have headed up the development of the Education Team and deputises the Artistic Director in developing and sustaining the company.
I am also a Training Coach with Personal Power UK which takes me across the UK training communities in various courses (inc. Binge Drinking, Conflict Resolution, Back into Employment etc) and engaging people in a process of change.
"...he's amazing, he understands new writers, can work really effectively in a short rehearsal period and has taken actors to places I didn't know were possible with my own words."
